Speaking

Speaking Tips:(14mins Approx)

The Speaking test is a face-to-face conversation with a certified examiner. It is as close to a real-life situation as a test can get.
The examiner will ask you about familiar topics such as home, work or studies in part 1. This should help you feel comfortable when speaking. Try and relax so that you can speak as naturally as possible.
Take time before the test to practice speaking with a partner, friend or teacher.
Keep in mind:
  1. try to talk as much as you can
  2. talk as fluently as possible and be spontaneous
  3. relax, be confident and enjoy using your English
  4. develop your answers
  5. speak more than the examiner
  6. ask for clarification if necessary
  7. do not learn prepared answers; the examiner is trained to spot this and will change the question
  8. express your opinions; you will be assessed on your ability to communicate
  9. the examiner’s questions tend to be fairly predictable; practise at home and record yourself
  • There are 3 type of question being asked in speaking test.
  • Part1: Simple questions based on likes/interest/personal information/etc
  • Part2: Topic Card ,speak more than 2 mins on a topic card given to you.In the topic card few sub questions are present and you need to answer all of them within 2 mins of time. You will also be provided with a pen and paper. You can make notes in the paper if you want and 1 min will be provided to do so.Use circle or some geometrical shape to highlight the major topic and the keywords of every sub questions answer should be pointed out with arrows.Talk about each keywords a little.
  • Part3: Questions related to a topic and you need to speak a longer time for each query. Don't hassle or panic. The questions are easy and try to use connectives and gap fillers while speaking.
  • Use proverbs if you can to make your speaking more appealing.

Task 2: is about expressing views on certain topic. It may include some agreement/disagreement,descriptive analysis,advantage/disadvantage,describing both aspects or views, etc.
Both tasks need excellent use of vocabulary and proverbs to impress the examiner.Use synonyms if need to use the word again.Avoid using repetitive words.

Reading

Reading Tips:(60mins total):

It is found that some students find reading section difficult.

You will be asked to read three different passages and respond to related questions in your IELTS Reading test. These are taken from books, journals, magazines and newspapers. They have been written for a non-specialist audience and are on academic topics of general interest. They range from the descriptive and factual to the discursive and analytical. Each text might be accompanied by diagrams, graphs or illustrations, and you will be expected to show that you understand these too.A simple glossary is provided if the material contains technical terms.
There are 40 questions for 3 different passages. The time should be utilized and it is recommended to spend only 15 mins for 1st paragraph ,20 mins for 2nd and 25 mins for the last one.It is believed that the hierarchy of difficulty is likewise. But the type of question also variate the level of difficulty depending on students individual.
A variety of question types is used. You may be asked to
  • ->fill gaps in a passage of written text or in a table
  • ->match headings to written text to diagrams or charts
  • ->complete sentences
  • ->give short answers to open questions
  • ->answer multiple choice questions

  • Sometimes you will need to give one word as your answer, sometimes a short phrase, and sometimes simply a letter, number or symbol. It is essential that you write your answers on the answer sheet. Nothing you write on the question paper will be marked. You may write your answers on the question paper and transfer them to the answer sheet before the end of the test if you like. However, it is important to note that you will not be given extra time to do this. You must write your answers in pencil.

  • Advice:
  • look out for the title, headings and any special features such as capital letters, underlining, italics, figures, graphs and tables
  1. make sure that you understand the questions and follow instructions carefully
  2. pay attention to timing; do not spend too long on one passage or question
  3. do not try and read every word; remember, you are reading for a purpose
  4. if you do not know the answer to a question, attempt it but do not waste time; move quickly onto the next one
  5. do not panic if you do not know anything about the subject of the text; all the answers can be found in the text
  6. the word(s) you use must be taken from the Reading text; you must not change the form of the word(s) in the text
  7. do not worry if there is a word that you do not understand – you may not need to use it
  8. check your spelling
  9. be careful to use singular and plural correctly
  10. focus precisely on what you are asked to do in ‘completion’ type questions
  11. if the question asks you to complete the note ‘in the…’ and the correct answer is ‘evening’, just use ‘evening’ as your answer; note that ‘in the evening’ would be incorrect
  12. pay attention to the word limit; for example, if you are asked to complete a sentence using no more than two words, if the correct answer is ‘silk shirt’, the answer ‘shirt made of silk’ would be incorrect
  13. attempt all questions; there are no penalties for incorrect answers, so you have nothing to lose
  14. check your answers
  15. The key factor to score better is practice more and more.

Listening

Listening Tips:(40mins total)

The IELTS Listening test will take about 30 minutes, and you will have an extra 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet.
There are 40 questions altogether. Each question carries one mark. For each part of the test, there will be time for you to look through the questions and time for you to check your answers.
When you have completed all four parts of the Listening test you will have ten minutes to copy your answers on to a separate answer sheet.
Before you begin writing answer,Listen to the instructions carefully.
You will be provided with a headphone and a bottle of water in the hall. You need to bring your stationary on your own. Instructions will be provided to you by the staff. In case of any query raise your hand simply, don't call them or talk to other students. The staff will come near you to listen to your query. If you have any issue in listening to the test audio played for you to check your headphone ,raise your hand.Beforehand the headphone should be checked and the volume be adjusted.
After the recording starts, listen to it very actively. It will start with some instruction and then the actual audio starts.Look for the question in the question paper for the first 10 question or as in the instruction. There is enough time to read the first 10 question.Search for the keywords in the audio you are listening.Try to figure out the answer for the question and jot it down then and there in the question paper.
The audio will give you time to correct your answers but in the meantime look for the next 10 questions and mark the main keywords you need to look after in the audio.Jot down the answer and follow the same step further. The accent may differ in each audio and the speed will increase. The last audio will give you very less time to read the question so its better to utilize the time given to correct the answer in reading the question. You will understand this during practice.
Now after you have completed listening to all audio, you will be provided 10 mins of extra time to copy the answer to answer sheet. Copy the answer very carefully with correct spellings and read the instruction in the question as it might ask us to use only one word or more than two words/number and so on.Match the tense and form of words with the sentence in the question.
